Plus-size models are driving new plastic surgery trend – butt lifts and breast implants, study warns

Academics at Boston University said the presence of larger models such as Ashley Graham (pictured) could increase demand for butt lifts and breast implants.

The study suggests that the growing popularity of plus size models may lead to an increase in butt lifts and breast implants in the West.

Researchers have said the rise of curvy celebrities such as Ashley Graham may be behind the growing demand for the sometimes dangerous procedures.

The study compared the social media presence and body measurements of more than 100 models.

He found no significant difference in the proportion of likes, comments and posts between plus-size or traditionally thin models.

This, according to the researchers, indicates that sensual women are becoming more and more popular.

The modeling industry has previously been accused of promoting unhealthy thin body types, which has been linked to eating disorders such as anorexia in young girls.

However, in the last decade there has been an increase in the number of British women going abroad for procedures that enhance women’s curves.

Lead researcher Dr Neelam Vashi, a dermatologist at Boston University, said the results showed a changing standard of beauty in pop culture.

He added: ‘Plastic surgeons may see increased interest in procedures, including breast and buttock augmentation, which involve a curvaceous and large body type.’

But the newly popular cosmetic surgery has been linked to a number of health problems.

A Brazilian butt lift — where fat is taken from one part of the body and injected into the rear — carries the highest risk of death of any cosmetic procedure.

Injected fat can cause blockage of blood vessels in the lungs.

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons does not recommend doing them until more is known about the risks.

Despite this, they are still available in the UK and US for up to £8,000 ($9,600).

At least three women in Britain have died in the past three years from complications from operations carried out in Turkey, where the procedures are often cheaper.

Brazilian Butt Lift: The Fastest Growing Surgery in the World

Brazilian butt lifts have become the fastest growing surgery worldwide, despite concerns about the procedure’s dangers.

According to the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of butt lifts worldwide has increased by 77.6 percent since 2015.

The procedure — where fat is taken from one part of the body and injected into the back — carries the highest risk of death of any cosmetic procedure.

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons advises against carrying them out until more is known about the risks of the increasingly popular £8,000 operation.

Despite this, they are still available in both the UK and the US.

The most recent study, published in the scientific journal Cureus, tracked the presence of 159 plus-size models on social networks.

They were compared to the 10 highest paid mainstream models in the world.

Researchers tracked their number of followers, average number of likes, comments and posts on Instagram to see how their social media presence varied.

The top 10 plus-sized models each had an average of 3.8 million followers, compared to 38 million for regular models.

But relative to their follower numbers, there was no significant difference between the top mainstream models and the top plus-size models in average likes per post, average comments per post, and total number of posts.

Ashley Graham had the most followers of any plus-sized model with over 12 million.

She was followed by Jordyn Woods (11.7 million), who used to be Kylie Jenner’s best friend.

The other top curvy models were Iskra Lawrence (4.6 million), a 31-year-old British model, and Ashley Alexis Smith (2.2 million), an American model and swimwear entrepreneur.

By comparison, the top billers for mainstream models were Kendall Jenner ($154 million) — who has a 24-inch waist — and Gigi Hadid ($64.4 million).

In this journal, the researchers stated: “Over time, the presence of plus size models in the fashion industry has increased.

“Societal pressures on retailers to incorporate increased body diversity that fully represents their company’s consumer base, with an average dress size of 14 to 16 and a BMI of 26.5, is likely contributing to the growing prevalence of plus size models.

“This shift can be seen in the results of this study, as many top plus-size models had a significant presence on social media.”

Plus size modeling took off in the mid-2000s after Jean-Paul Gaultier and John Galliano used larger women in their Spring 2006 shows in Paris.
