Fake fentanyl is responsible for the deaths of nearly 50 people in Brooklyn and Staten Island last year, the special narcotics prosecutor said.

Bridget Brennan said fentanyl analogs, as they are called, have a slightly different composition than the real drug, but can be more dangerous and unpredictable.

According to Brennan, 48 Brooklyn and Staten Island deaths last year from fake opioids. The New York Daily News reports that because the modified drug is still close to the original formulation, it is technically legal.

“They’re enhancements to fentanyl,” Brennan told the Daily News. “It’s just a little different in composition. Because they’re a little different, they’re not covered by state law.”

She told the newspaper she was concerned about the regular use of the modified drug – which is on average about 50 times more potent than heroin.

In October, the state legislature added two of the 11 fentanyl analogs Governor Cuomo proposed to the controlled substance protocol. Brennan said the analog responsible for the 48 deaths is one of nine legal analogs so far.

She said the data found that one analog, called fluroisobutyrylfentanyl, was found in 30 of the 48 overdose deaths.

According to Brennan, the modified drug is believed to have originated in China and is being shipped to the U.S. in small packages through the mail or private shipping services. Brennan said that because most analogs are still considered legal, they are difficult to get off the street.

“It really hinders our ability to get to the top of the distribution chain and shut down the supply of drugs that are killing so many people,” she said.

“We can’t get wiretaps or search warrants or any of those techniques that we would use and that we use when we’re dealing with a controlled substance,” Brennan added.
