Jessica Cowdery died of an overdose after texting her ex-partner asking him to tell her six-year-old son Leo that she loved him.

A young mother died of an overdose after asking her ex-partner to tell her son she loved him.

Jessica Cowdery, 26, sent pictures of empty medicine packets to a friend before paramedics found her unresponsive at her home in Bridgend, South Wales.

The inquest heard she struggled to cope with the death of her pregnant sister Amy in 2013 and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Ms Chowdery’s mother, Elaine Llewellyn, said after her death that she did not think she was getting enough support for her mental health.

Mrs Chowdery died on November 22 last year after texting her ex-partner, with whom her six-year-old son lived: ‘Will you let Leo know how much his mum loves him? Please please.’

She later sent disturbing messages to a friend, leading to her being found unconscious at her home.

In a statement to the inquest, her mother Elaine, 57, said: “She has been drinking more in the last few weeks.”

Coroner Andrew Barkely gave a narrative verdict after hearing the levels of drug toxicity that led to Ms Cowdery’s death.

Concluding, Mr Barkely said: “The evidence is that Miss Cowdery was found at her home address who, from what she said, appeared to be considering an overdose.

“By the time help arrived she was unresponsive and nothing could be done to save her.

Ms Chowdery’s ex-partner Christopher Cheung broke the tragic news to their son Leo, who said he wanted to write a message to his mother when he heard it.

He later wrote a heart-wrenching letter saying: ‘Mum I love you so much xx from Leo’.

Mrs Cowdery’s mother said after her death: “When she was high she was very high but when she was low she would wish the world had ended.

“I understand that mental health is tied to money, but she should have a psychiatrist or mental health professional help her with that. If she had help, she’d probably still be here.’
